3d landscape design

Sketchup is 3D Landscape design software that is used for many different industries.

However, for the hard to visualize area of landscape design, it can provide one of the best portrayals of the 3D landscape.

Sketchup was originally owned by @Last Software, but it was bought by Google. Hmmm....I guess Google thought it was pretty good. And it is.

There is a free version and a paid version. For the average person, the free version is fine. If you want to get more intricate with such things as grading and showing different elevations, then you will want the paid version.

For residential design, you can use this program in a couple of different ways.

The first way is to design right in the program. With a click of the mouse, you can set the drawing in a perspective position. Guidelines help you make sure you are drawing correctly. You can enter actual heights and lengths of objects, such as a house. You can put in the dimensions of the house, ie., length and width. Then use something called the pull tool to extend it up to the correct height.

It is all very user friendly. Also, what is created has an artistic flair to it, which makes it a lot of fun!

You can also view different materials for landscape elements. For example, if you are drawing a patio, you can go to the Materials area and choose what you might like. There are many different materials and you can change them as you like to see the differences. Some choices are stone, pavers, brick and concrete.

Some of the components you can add to the 3D landscape design are people, cars, grills, pergolas, plants, any many, many more. These are available directly through the program or through something called Google Warehouse. They are all free.

There is a lot of flexibility with the components. You can resize or rescale them if you need to. You can also change colors of both components and materials.

By adding window components to a house, you can actually position a person inside the house. This allows you to attain a view as if you were inside looking out. What a great feature to see what your view will be like.

You can also create scenes. Scenes let you save a particular view. These scenes can also be exported into jpeg images. You can also create an animation which is a fly by or walk through of the entire design!

Any or all of these features can be used to suit your purposes. The software can be used in both simple and sophisticated ways. There are many other features available also. All in all it is a great 3D program.

Landscape Design Company

To charge or not to charge for landscape design work? I absolutely LOVE this topic, unlike most landscape contractors who would rather discuss the latest model of skid steer rather than discuss charging design fees. As design/build professionals we MUST charge for our design work. I'll explain why in a moment.

But first, let's talk about two distinct types of landscape companies-"Design Driven" companies and "Sales Driven" companies.

I define "Design Driven" companies and landscape designers as those who put the design above all else. This is the company who strives to exceed the clients' expectations by providing appropriate solutions to the stated concerns and problems. By "appropriate solutions", I'm referring to solutions that are best for the CLIENT, not the company.

Landscape design professionals deserve to be paid a fair fee for their design time, creativity and expertise. Enough talk about how a design should be treated as a "Sales Tool" and given away. Each time I hear this, I just want to slam my head against one of the numerous segmental retaining walls that dominate our landscapes.

I consider there to be 9 reasons why we must charge for our landscape design work, but in this article I will only cover one concept which I refer to as "The Upward Spiral". I coined this term to describe the effect on a company, or landscape designer, when a commitment is made to becoming design-driven. This commitment, plus the ensuing convergence of 4 factors, all amplifying each other, creates a spiral upward.

The 4 factors are:

1. Charging a design fee (congruent with your present skill level)
2. Increasing confidence
3. Growth in landscape design skills
4. Higher level of clientele

Each of these factors affects the other. For example, when a client compensates you for your design expertise, they are displaying confidence in you. This show of confidence, trust and respect naturally leads to higher confidence in yourself. With this increased personal confidence, you inevitably become a better designer with a growing skill set. As your skill set and talent level increases, the level of your clientele increases as well. As your level of clientele increases, your landscape design fee increases. This chain of events and "upward spiral" go on and on and on...

This "upward spiral" starts with a commitment. You must be committed to charging for your work. If a prospect doesn't want to compensate you, then you walk away. You must be committed to growing your design skills by furthering your education, visiting great works by others and by stretching your creativity beyond the industry norm.

Ask yourself--"Are you a design-driven company or a sales-driven company"? Get onboard the "Upward Spiral" and take the first step by charging a fair landscape design fee for your time. If you continue to "give away" your talent, you lose the trust, respect and confidence that come with being viewed and treated as a professional. Without this, what is your incentive to improve and grow as a professional landscape designer or design/build company?

Landscaping Designs

Most commonly, it is the front yard which is given enough attention in terms of decoration because this is one of the most visible places of the house. There are considerations that should be put into account when it comes to front yard landscaping designs to make your work perfect. The factors written below are some of the things worth considering when choosing the design you can use for your front yard, better read on:

1. The Layout

Before anything else, consider the layout design which may either be symmetrical design or asymmetrical design. You are free to choose whatever you like, just as long as you can competently balance all elements of the landscape in order to create unity among them. In case you opt for the symmetrical design, this is like having a mirror division of the house and the front yard. This kind is best for those with doors at the center of the house and those houses that contains equal amount of windows. Going for symmetrical pattern means going through a lot of work because this is difficult to achieve but the result is great because it can compliment houses effectively thus creating a formal look.

On the other hand, there is the asymmetrical plan for front yard landscaping designs which is famous for its relaxed look that it gives. This is easier to do. Be reminded though that despite the fact that this is the opposite of the symmetrical design, asymmetrical also offers unity of look.

2. Additional Touches

After creating the design layout, it is the best time to add touches that can further perk up the look of the whole unit. Some of the things which you can use are trees, plants, shrubs, flowering plants, and a lot more. It is important that you put into mind the result of a particular plant when you put such into your house. It is also vital that you see to it that the plants and trees you will match one another.

These plants and trees should be placed at the right position as well. Do not plant trees in front of your house because this will block the overall look of your place. Also, it is important to never plant shrubs which are too close to the driveway. In case you have to plant trees, think about its grownup size so you don't end up having an extremely large tree in front of your house.

3. Add Other Touches

By the time when you are finish working with plants and trees that you will incorporate in your front yard landscaping designs, you can shift your focus to other additional touches like walls, fences, paving, and a lot more. They should complement your whole house. You are free to add elements which you think will further augment the look of your place and consider adding extra materials which you and the whole family can use as well such as swings for children and coffee table for grownups.
